Evangelists and Public health Nannies

What do they have in common?

* Both of them are sure that they know better than you abotu what is good for you
* Both of them are sure that your current lifestyle is killing you, and that they need to save you.
* Both of them try to manipulate public policy to make sure that their goals are met.

So what if one group is predominantly on the left and the other is on the right?
So what if one group is more concentrated on your health in this world, while the other is more concerned about your health in another?

It's just not THAT different.

Sometimes, the gap between two different people isn't quite as wide as you'd think.

Market Failure? Try again..

I was wondering today..

When there is a 'market failure' - people call for government intervention to 'fix' the problem. Areas such as housing and welfare policy and many others use this tack.

Now.. when there is a 'government failure' - such as in a great many public school systems, those same people instead of wanting 'market intervention', they want more money and more power to supposedly fix the problem of the government failure.

I wonder why that is?

Just my friday night thought..

Of Course its not a war!

From the AP:

"BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A recording purportedly made by the mastermind of bombings and beheadings in Iraq threatened to assassinate Iraq's interim prime minister and fight the Americans "until Islamic rule is back on Earth."

No, thanks.. really, I rather prefer the system we've got. Thanks, though!

See, the big difference here is that we have an open and tolerant enough society that allows for people to have and express whateer worldviews they like. Do you know what happens to you if you belive something 'against the grain' in a place like (the old) Iraq?

Try this on for size..

The Better System?

Hey, commiesneo-socialist sympathizers.. If Cuba is such a fine and upstanding place, why is it that people risk life and limb just to make it out of there and to the shores of America?

Do you think that they might know something that you don't?

Words to live by

What?!

Id like you read the following passage with me, written by Michael Feingold in the Village Voice. Hey, read it out loud even, just so that you can hear how the words sound out loud:

"Republicans don't believe in the imagination, partly because so few of them have one, but mostly because it gets in the way of their chosen work, which is to destroy the human race and the planet. Human beings, who have imaginations, can see a recipe for disaster in the making; Republicans, whose goal in life is to profit from disaster and who don't give a hoot about human beings, either can't or won't. Which is why I personally think they should be exterminated before they cause any more harm."

Now, i'd like you to go back and re-read that passage and replace the word 'republicans' with oh.. say the word 'Jews' or the word 'black people'..

Read that back to me like that.. out loud, and tell me who exactly is the party of hatred, the party of opressors, the party of the vile?

Yeah.. right. Exactly.

But somehow I don't think that there will be one single drop of outcry over his statement at all. But just imagine what would happen if those words really were 'Jews' or 'Blacks'.

Imagine.

Somehow, its become politically correct to hate people.. as long as they're republicans.

Somehow thats ok.
